Potography NOW
Juror’s Comments
In jurying this show, I looked for originality, humanity and craftsmanship. I sought photographs that pushed the already seen and known into new turf, both in terms of personal vision and use of materials.
—Karin Rosenthal
First Prize
Marky Kauffmann
Lost Beauty Burns Facial Wrap
This image goes beyond being a powerful, soulful and beautiful portrait and becomes a commentary on our cultural response to aging, inventively using bleach as an erasure of the effects of time.
Second Prize
Kalman Zabarsky
Negative Dream 3
An intelligently crafted piece, this image uses digital means to reflect on photography’s film history. It fuses traditional photography with our modern digital era, a personal commentary on “Photography Now.”
Third Prize
Stephanie Grenadier
Cloud Cover
Stephanie’s print is an exquisitely realized fusion of two black and white images. One photo enhances the other in a seamless way that allows the human presence and gaze to be foremost.
Merit Awards
Bob Avakian
Into the Light
The well-considered use of light and form, along with well-placed compositional elements, give this highly distilled night photograph an evocative power and glow.
Dave Kendrick
eOpolis Ventilator
A distinctive, energetic and well-crafted piece, this photo lives on an edge between urban fragmentation and painting.
Molly Harrington
Untitled #2
The simplicity and unpretentious straightforwardness of this portrait give it added power, allowing the emotion of the sitter to be conveyed directly to the viewer.
Elandro Veros
They Have a Dream
While obviously referencing an Annie Liebowitz portrait, this image has pushed into new turf of gender and race. The comfort and conviction of the two women, even while posing for the camera, make this a strong image.
Honorable Mention
Jeremy Barnard, The Village
Eric Myrvaagnes, Bushes Dunes
Bart Blumberg, Ted’s Red Seat
John Thomas Grant, A Final Thought
Jen Drociak, Secondary Clarifier, Manchester Wastewater Treatment Facility
