Feb 14–March 23 • OPENING RECEPTION: Feb 14, 6–8 PM
Bancroft Gallery: National Juried Show • Love—Juror: Eric Aho
Sponsored by:
Eric Aho is an American painter known for his gestural, abstracted paintings that evoke natural forms. While Aho works from his impressions of the landscape, he also draws upon major pillars of art history—such as works by De Kooning and Goya—to define his compositions.
Recent solo exhibitions include Eric Aho: In the Landscape at the Federal Reserve Board, Washington, DC (2013); Translation at DC Moore Gallery in New York City (2013); Transcending Nature: Paintings by Eric Aho at the Currier Museum of Art, New Hampsire (2012); and Eric Aho: Ice Box at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in Vermont (2009).
His work is included in the permanent collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, CA; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; among others. Aho’s paintings have also been shown internationally in Ireland, South Africa, Cuba, Norway, and Finland, among others.
JURORS COMMENTS & PRIZE WINNERS
This was a challenging exhibition to judge. Nearly all the work submitted was worthy of consideration and nearly all suited the subject of this exhibition. "Love," to be sure, is a tall order to define, let alone represent in painting, sculpture, printmaking or photography. The works selected here, in one way or another, eschew cliché, sentimentality or common expression. Some of them address cliché and sentimentality head-on. As you might expect, this exhibition presents a wide variety of vantage points, attitudes and approaches.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Eric Aho
1st Place Lustre, Laurie Kaplowitz
A complex and masterfully constructed image. The engaging details from the pun of the title to the lipstick on the tissue establish a complete and sustained vision encapsulated in a brief moment. I like the role of the mirrors and the feeling of fleeting glances, held in a painting of great planning, craft and execution.
2nd Place Mediated 1, Kevin Belanger
A portrait of a portrait session. The distance of the photographer from the subject removes the sentimentality inherent in the portrait of the couple at the seashore. A photograph commenting on photograph, I think is very compelling undertaking. We the ultimate viewer is removed three times from the subject. Once by the initial photographer, again by the photographer of this piece and then again by the print itself. The added multiple distances in contrast to the scale of the ocean creates an enormous spatial and emotional distance.
3rd Place Paint on Canvas X (red family), Beverly Rippel
Flesh is the reason paint was invented; here we have paint painted like flesh. This is for anyone who simply loves the material of paint.
Award of Merit Doll House on Prison Hill, Jamie Bowman
A small painting with a big presence. I especially like the coarse handling of paint that helps negotiate the line of sentimentality and memory. The upper left section of the painting could live on its own with its Dickinsonian echo.
Award of Merit Mother & Son, Russell duPont
What an odd a painting.... Brave and honest. The emotional struggle and contrast between the mother and son figures of the subject is further telegraphed by the awkward handling of the paint. This little painting is challenging to view.
Award of Merit Allison Fay_C_3-18-13--11AD, Dan McCormack
It is difficult to make a nude photograph interesting. This photo feels like a classic. The composition is lovely; notice the banister and its shadow. What I like most about this photograph is that it would still be a great photograph even if the nude wasn't a part of it.
Award of Merit Electroshock, me and my dad 1958, Gary Urgonski
A sad and poignant installation reflecting on a dark time in our cultural understanding of mental illness. A curious use of material and clever presentation make this construction relevant beyond sentiment.
