Gallery Artist Prize Show—Kay Kopper

OPENING RECEPTION: May 30, 6–8 PM

Kay Kopper’s drawings are very personal articulations of our natural world.

The success of her work comes not only from her strong technique, mastery of the page, and apparent bond with her subjects – it is tied to the clear purpose she has in making each drawing. Kopper is dedicated to treating her botanicals with respect and to remembering and studying the remarkable lifecycle of her specimens.  These subjects form her close circle of friends, and we sense the connection and admiration she holds for the group. We have no doubt that she treasures this friendship.

Kopper’s role in the relationship is distinct.  She is the straight-shooter in the gang.  The one that calls it as she sees it.  She doesn’t mince words.  A crispy Milkweed leaf, a fallen Lily-of-the-Valley flower – her authentic images are as sassy as they are romantic. Thanks to Kopper we get the behind-the-scenes look at this powerful bevy of beauties before they’ve put on their make-up – and after it wears off. She certainly pays tribute to them in their prime, but also makes it a point to place them center stage, even on the occasional bad hair day.

I find this series magnetic and thought provoking. It spotlights our interdependence with, and the intricacies of, the natural world. It gracefully reminds us that our remarkable natural capital must be preserved and maintained and that we have been appointed custodian/friend.
