uror Comments—Denise Markonish
1st Place
Annemarie Whilton Drifting Away—Throughout the jurying process I kept coming back to this painting. The surreality of the figures stands out, as does the existential subtext, signaling how humans block each other off. I also find the looseness with which this work is painted very effective.
2nd Place
Kate Holcomb Hale He Asked For a Pair of Scissors and Pointed to These—I was impressed with the ambition of this piece and the artist’s desire to engage with space. This work subverts traditions of drawing and painting and allows us to see how material can merge with architecture.
3rd Place
Colin Moore Affect—Traditional figurative sculpture can be a tricky terrain, I appreciate this artist’s obvious skill but also their willingness to go with a non-traditional pose. The gesture of the shrugging, nonplussed girl is a great monument to teenagerdom.
Awards of Merit
Donna DeLone By the Sea— I like the humor in this piece and the fact that it surprises you. When I first looked at it, I focused on the rocks, ocean and seaweed, until I scanned the scene and saw the unexpected. The placid doll in the corner, covered in seaweed, at once darkly buried and playing a coy game of hide and seek.
Eleanor Elkin noose—The dark humor in this piece kept me coming back to it. I appreciate the craft involved in the hand weaving here and how the noose imagery is counter to what one expects t find.
Wilson Hunt Untitled—There is such a great energy in this painting and I like the way the artist combined a color palate full of bright colors and contrasting neutrals along with exuberant gestural moments.
Tanya Fletcher Shade I, II, III—The delicacy of these drawings is quite beautiful and the use of silver leaf gives these drawings a luminosity that plays off the close cropping of the figure, and the presence of the wood grain.
